Manufacturing at commercial scale
From fermentation technology to industrial production
Clean Food Group’s manufacturing facility in Knowsley, Liverpool provides the infrastructure to develop and manufacture sustainable oils and fats at commercial scale.
With one million litres of installed fermentation capacity, alongside R&D, scale-up and downstream processing capabilities, the site enables us to manage the full journey from process development through to commercial manufacture.

Proven at scale
Our CLEANOilCell™ technology has been developed with scale in mind from the outset.
At Knowsley, we have already successfully transferred our process into commercial-scale fermentation, including the production of two tonnes of oil in a single fermentation run.
The site gives us access to fermentation vessels across a range of scales, allowing our team to develop, optimise and scale processes within the same manufacturing environment.

-
10,000L – 20,000L Process development and scale-up

Together, this provides a clear pathway from R&D through to commercial production.
One million litres of fermentation capacity
Our Knowsley facility provides one million litres of installed fermentation capacity, together with the supporting infrastructure required for commercial production.
The site includes:
Having these capabilities on one site allows us to move efficiently between development, scale-up and manufacture, while maintaining control over process, quality and consistency.
Designed to make use of existing infrastructure
Our proprietary non-GM yeast strains have been developed to operate in existing industrial fermentation equipment. This means commercial production does not necessarily depend on building new, purpose-built bioreactors.
For Clean Food Group, this has allowed us to establish significant manufacturing capacity more quickly and with considerably lower capital requirements than a traditional greenfield biotechnology facility.
It also provides a model for future expansion.
Existing infrastructure. Lower capital requirements. A faster route to scale.
A more flexible route to global production
Our manufacturing strategy extends beyond the Knowsley site.
The ability to use existing fermentation infrastructure creates the potential to establish production closer to our customers, using local feedstocks and existing industrial assets.
Rather than relying solely on large, purpose-built facilities, our technology can be transferred into suitable fermentation sites through manufacturing partnerships and licensing.
This provides a route to expanding capacity internationally while maintaining a capital-efficient approach to growth.
It also supports our wider aim of creating shorter, more resilient and more sustainable supply chains for oils and fats.
Built for commercial production
Clean Food Group brings together proprietary fermentation technology, commercial-scale manufacturing infrastructure and an experienced team with a track record in industrial fermentation.
With our process already validated at commercial scale and one million litres of installed fermentation capacity, we are well positioned to move from development into commercial supply.
